Foreign Correspondents Ep.189
Trump’s proposal to expand G7 membership: what it means for S. Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump announced his plans to invite South Korea, Australia, India and Russia to the Group of Seven summit later this year. He called the G7 an “outdated group of countries”, calling for a permanent expansion of the group to a G11 or G12. Some experts believe the main reason the U.S. is pushing for an expanded G7 meeting is to check China’s rise. Others have raised concerns that taking part in the G7 could hurt Seoul’s relations with Beijing. Meanwhile, the UK and Canada have voiced opposition to Russia’s return to the G7. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to talk more about the motives behind Trump’s proposal and how it is being received in East Asia and Europe.
