Arirang TV, the First Korean Broadcaster to Air in the U.K.
Arirang TV (CEO Moon Jae-wan) started its transmission on the U.K.'s largest satellite platform SKY UK and free digital satellite platform Freesat on Sept. 27 (Korean time midnight, U.K. time 16:00 on the 26th), becoming the first Korean broadcaster to transmit a 24-hour HD broadcast in the whole area of the U.K. Simultaneously, 2016 Fall Program Reorganization was also done in which specialized contents per zone (Europe, the Americas, Asia, Korea) are transmitted during the prime times respectively.
SKY UK, the largest satellite platform in the UK, has a viewership of 11 million (HD broadcast 5.3 million) households, which is over 60% of the paid U.K. TV market, making it an unrivaled broadcast platform. Digital satellite platform Freesat is a collaborative company of the BBC and ITV, which was established in 2008 and is offering a broadcasting service to 1.9 million (HD broadcast 1.3 million) households throughout the country.
Currently in the U.K, major international channels such as Japan’s NHK World, China’s CCTV News, Russia’s Russia Today, France’s France 24 have advanced into U.K.’s representative platform and are competing to create an amicable public opinion of their own countries. Arirang TV is ready for HD broadcasting following the changing trend of the international broadcasting environment, and has pushed forward to enter the U.K. satellite platform on Sept. 27 (Korean time midnight) under the plan to strengthen broadcasting in the region of Europe, additionally to the already strong regions of Asia and North America.
Arirang TV has had the viewership of 127 million households (as of December 2015) in 106 countries around the world, and has earned an additional 5.3 million households on SKY and 1.3 million households on Freesat thanks to its entry into the U.K.
Arirang TV's is classified as a news channel, among the genres of news, entertainment, culture and sports, like the other major international broadcasters. - the channel number being 690 on SKY, and 214 on Freesat.
CEO Moon Jae-wan commented on Arirang TV’s advance into U.K. HD satellite broadcasting as follows: "We have acquired a bridgehead in which we can widely promote Korean culture, economics and etc. to the European region." He also added, "This advancement will help us form positive public opinions towards Korea regarding pending issues." .
Starting its public broadcasting on DirecTV, North America's global satellite platform in February 2014, Arirang TV is transmitting its contents to 11 million households in North America.
In July 2015, Arirang TV entered the UN Headquarter as a In-House Network Channel and has been continuously launching channels in digital terrestial TV in 5 major cities including New York and LA. As Arirang TV starts HD broadcasting in the U.K, now it can expand and strengthen its broadcasting influence in two biggest regions, which are the major English-speaking countries and world's public opinion leaders.
