S. Korea's new COVID-19 cases at six-week low; on alert over variants Updated: 2021-05-11 06:09:28 KST

South Korea reported 463 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, dipping by more than a hundred to the lowest daily figure since late March.
436 of Monday's cases were transmitted locally, with over 280 from the capital region.
These include cluster infections at a church in Seoul's Seodaemun-gu District and an elementary school in Gangnam-gu District.
Out of Monday's 27 imported cases, more than one quarter come from India.

"South Koreans and long-stay foreigners coming from India have to stay in state-designated accommodation for seven days and must test negative twice before being able to isolate on their own for the remaining week of their quarantine period."

This applies to people arriving on direct, chartered flights and those traveling from India on regular flights via a third country.
Despite an overall downward trend, health authorities are on alert over the influx of variant strains.

"Cases from overseas have fallen by 8.one to an average of 22 a day but their threat is still alive considering COVID-19's global resurgence, especially in India. We're isolating those coming from areas at high risk for the South African variant like South Africa and Tanzania at state-designated facilities for 14 days."

As of May 4th, Korea has reported a total of 632 cases of the three main variants from the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil since last October.
This number climbs to about one,500 when including those who have tested positive for COVID-19 and come into contact with someone with a variant strain.
Adding to concerns is an imported case from a man who contracted the virus after already receiving two doses of the Sputnik V vaccine during a trip in Russia.
South Korea's total infection tally now stands at 127,772.
There has been 1 more death, raising the death toll to one,875.
