S. Korea to make on-site inspections of overseas kimchi manufacturers on safety concerns Updated: 2021-04-15 15:10:24 KST

The South Korean authorities are going to start making on-site inspections of kimchi factories overseas to make sure they're following good sanitation standards when making one of Korea's most widely consumed foods.
This comes after a video went viral showing a man at a kimchi factory in China working waist-deep in a pit full of cabbage with no sanitary gear, and rusty excavators being used to move the cabbages.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety says it'll send inspectors to more than a hundred kimchi manufacturers overseas in the coming years and apply the same standards it does to domestic ones.
This year, it aims to inspect 26 factories overseas and then at least 20 every year going forward.
