UK says Russia planning to install pro-Russian leader in Ukraine Updated: 2022-01-23 14:41:40 KST

The British foreign office said Saturday in a statement that it has information indicating that Russia is planning to "install a pro-Russia leader" in Ukraine as it "considers whether to invade or occupy Ukraine."
A potential candidate under consideration, it said, is former Ukrainian lawmaker Yevhen Murayev, though Murayev told CNN that there is "nothing to comment on" as he is a Ukrainian national and still faces Russian sanctions.
Russia's Foreign Ministry on Sunday referred to the allegations as "nonsense" and said the UK's foreign office should stop engaging in what it called "provocations."
According to CNN, a source at the White House said the U.S. "has the same information" as the UK.
