S. Korea records 1,318 cases on Mon; 40% from outside capital region Updated: 2021-07-26 17:02:09 KST

South Korea recorded 1,318 new coronavirus cases on Monday.
The numbers were lower than those reported the previous day due to fewer tests conducted over the weekend.
More than 40 percent of the cases were from outside the capital region and authorities are worried that this will lead to further spread amid the summer vacation season.

"In the past week, South Korea reported a daily average of 1,465.1 cases and it's eight.seven percent higher than the previous week. So, cases are spreading across the country especially in Busan, Daejeon, Jeju Island and Gangwon-do Province."

Another concern is that more cases of the highly contagious Delta variant are popping up nationwide.
Health authorities said that 48 percent of last week's cases were found to be the Delta variant and the rate could surpass 50 percent this week.
To curb the virus, Korea decided to implement stricter distancing measures outside the capital region as people from the greater Seoul area could travel during the vacation season.
Distancing measures outside the capital will rise to level three starting from Tuesday.
This will only allow private gatherings of up to four people and restaurants and cafes have to close by 10 PM.
And it limits events like weddings and funerals to no more than 49 people.
Meanwhile, military personnel nationwide will be banned from seeing visitors or going off-base.
And, only up to 10 percent of troops can go on vacation at the same time.
This will take effect until August 8th.

And for the cities of Daejeon and Gimhae where we've seen a spike in the number of coronavirus cases in the last few days, social distancing will be ramped up to level four - the highest on the four-tier system and the same as the greater capital area.
