Chile's government defeated as citizens pick independents to draft new constitution Updated: 2021-05-18 09:56:41 KST

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera's ruling coalition has suffered a defeat, failing to secure control of a body that will draft the country's new constitution.
Over the weekend, citizens cast ballots to elect 155 delegates who will be tasked with rewriting the constitution after fierce protests in the country.
The ruling coalition was aiming to win at least a third of the seats, as any changes to the new constitution requires two-thirds approval.
But with 90 percent of votes counted, the president's coalition secured just 21 percent of the ballots cast.
