The generals in Myanmar who led last month's coup say they want to eventually leave politics and also improve ties with the United States and distance Myanmar from China.
This is according to a lobbyist hired by the junta who was interviewed by Reuters.
The Israeli-Canadian, Ari Ben-Manashe, said that the military is best placed to lead Myanmar's return to democracy.
The U.S. and other countries, he said, have "misunderstood" the generals.
The junta also wants to "repatriate" the Rohingya Muslims who have fled in recent years to Bangladesh.
Reuters says the Myanmar government and the State Department both declined to comment on the report.
