Confirmed cases of coronavirus top 69,000 worldwide Updated: 2020-02-17 03:35:24 KST

The coronavirus continues to spread in China and across the world.
It's infected more than 69-thousand people globally, with China adding over 2,000 new cases on Sunday, but that's actually a drop in the number of new infections for a third straight day.
As part of measures to contain the outbreak, Beijing has ordered everyone returning to the city to be quarantined for 14 days or face legal repercussions.

Over in Japan, 70 more people have tested positive for the virus onboard the Diamond Princess docked at Yokohama Port.
That brings the number of total confirmed cases to over 400 in the country the highest number outside of China.
The U.S. is preparing to evacuate its citizens as early as Sunday evening, while Canada and Hong Kong plan to follow suit.

Meanwhile, France confirmed its first death from the coronavirus over the weekend in what becomes the first fatality in Europe.
French authorities said an 80-year-old Chinese tourist died of lung infection due to the flu-like virus at a hospital in Paris.

And in another first the African continent reported a confirmed case of coronavirus, after a person in Egypt tested positive for the disease.
Specific details of the patient haven't been revealed, but is known to be a foreigner.
The person is currently in isolation at a hospital and in a stable condition.
