South Korea says the ASEAN-Korea commemorative summit will be an opportunity for Seoul to further elevate its ties with Southeast Asia.
Speaking on Sunday ahead of the official opening, foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha noted that during the 30-year partnership between Seoul and ASEAN , trade volume has jumped 20 fold, while personal exchanges have grown 40 times.
She said the summit will provide the chance for in-depth discussions to further promote cooperation on various fronts, like infrastructure and smart-cities.
Kang also said it's an opportunity to further gain support from ASEAN for the peace drive on the Korean peninsula, adding that a separate session on the matter has been arranged for the first time.
Separately, in a meeting with the Secretary General of ASEAN Kang called for continued cooperation for Seoul's signature New Southern Policy.
