The top diplomats of Seoul and Beijing met Monday via a video call to discuss regional and global issues.
In their first talks since South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin took office last week, the two expressed concerns about North Korea's COVID-19 outbreak.
According to Seoul's foreign ministry, Park and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi shared the same view that humanitarian aid needs to be provided to Pyeongyang.
Pointing out continued provocations by the North, Park called for Beijing to play a constructive role in addressing Pyeongyang's nuclear issues.
On the other hand, Wang stressed that the Korean Peninsula has generally remained peaceful, thanks to efforts exerted by all related parties.
During the talks, Park underscored the common value of liberal democracy, urging China to fulfill its responsibilities and duties in the international community.
To this, Wang asked South Korea not to join Washington-led pressure on Beijing.
Meanwhile, the two senior officials also discussed the need to deepen bilateral ties via high-level communication, mutual cooperation and cultural exchange as this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
They agreed to carry out strategic communications for close coordination on a wide range of issues including economy, health care, and climate change.
