Seoul's foreign minister says there is no reason to object to Tokyo's recent decision to discharge contaminated Fukushima water into the ocean as long as it follows the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
In a hearing on Monday, Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong urged Japan to provide sufficient scientific evidence and, in future, to consult Seoul in advance.
He also stressed that experts from Seoul should be able to participate in the IAEA's safety verification process.
Japanese Ambassador Koichi Aiboshi said Monday that South Korea can be part of the IAEA monitoring team.
While noting that Seoul has to consult with the UN nuclear watchdog directly, he said South Korea's participation would be possible.
