Updated: 2021-04-16 15:08:39 KST
Japan has expanded its COVID-19 curbs to 10 regions, casting doubt as to whether the upcoming Tokyo Olympics can go ahead as planned.
Economy Minister Yasutoshi Nishimura said the government is considering adding four more prefectures to those already under the orders, including the cities of Tokyo and Osaka.
Daily cases in Osaka reached a record 1,208 on Thursday, driven by the more contagious British strain of the virus.
Tokyo reported 729 new infections, the most since February.
A senior ruling party official has said on Thursday that cancelling this year's Olympics remains an option if the COVID-19 situation becomes too dire.
