U.S. Senate advances bill on hate crimes against Asian Americans
Updated: 2021-04-15 15:51:49 KST
The U.S. is one step closer to passing new legislation to combat hate crimes amid a recent wave of violence against Asian-Americans.
The Senate has voted 92 to 6 to move the bill toward a vote by preventing a fillibuster.
It's still not known when the Senate will vote on the bill itself, but Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Tuesday that the goal is to pass it by the end of the week.
The bill would designate an official at the Justice Department to speed up reviews of hate crimes reported in the pandemic.
It would also provide guidance on hate crimes to local police departments and guidance on avoiding discriminatory language in describing the pandemic.
