Tongyeong International Music Festival kicked off yesterday, with high expectations after a two-year wait due to the pandemic.
Our Kim Bo-kyoung was there.
Tongyeong International Music Festival kicked off on Friday, returning after two years, as last year's event was canceled due to the pandemic.
Here, in the small port city of Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do Province, the festival has range of performances aiming to deliver a message of hope.
This year's theme is 'Changing Reality' reflecting the trying times caused by COVID-19.
The artists, including the conductor of the opening concert, say they are very thankful to be able to perform in front of an audience.
This is down to the hard work of the event's organizers.

"We have put a lot of effort into preventive measures. All the artists and backstage staff have taken COVID-19 tests. The concert hall will only open one and a half an hours before the show begins, and only half of the seats will be used."

"I want to say thank you to the festival because they believe in culture. It is very important because we suffered because all concerts are canceled and here is the proof that if we take care of each other, we can make music. For that reason, I am so happy to be here."

There are around 20 performances, including the ballet 'Dear Luna', about the flow and change of the moon with media art helping to tell the story.
Lots of attention has been paid to actress Han Yeri from the Oscar-nominated film 'Minari' who is also taking part as a performer and narrator.
Unfortunately, globally recognized violinist Chung Kyung-wha had to cancel due to a finger injury. but there will be plenty of other great performers including pansori-based alternative pop band Leenalchi.
The festival will be lived streamed via Tongyeong International Music Foundation's official YouTube channel.

"Believing in the power of music to soothe people's minds, Tongyeong International Music Festival will present a range of shows until April 4th both live and online. Kim Bo-kyoung, Arirang news, Tongyeong.""
