Washington's top disease expert, Anthony Fauci, says the U.S. is closely monitoring a new strain of swine flu emerging from China that could have the potential to become a pandemic.
During a senate hearing on Tuesday, Fauci said the virus was "not an immediate threat" but something to "keep an eye on."
He added that while the flu has not yet been shown to pass from human to human, it is exhibiting "reassortment capabilities."
A day earlier, Chinese and British scientists found that the new virus called "G4 EA H1N1" shared similar characteristics with the deadly H1N1 virus that triggered a global pandemic in 2009.
