Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam says Chinese President Xi Jinping has assured her that Beijing will not tighten controls on the city despite the months-long mass protests taking place there.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, Lam said President Xi has offered personal assurances that he would not use the protests as an excuse to tighten China's controls on Hong Kong.
She added the Chinese government has made it clear to her that China wants Hong Kong to succeed under the 'One Country, Two Systems' policy and have a high degree of autonomy.
