Updated: 2020-01-21 16:35:54 KST
The South Korean government will start providing support to North Korean defectors in the South who are struggling to meet their basic needs.
That's according to Seoul's unification ministry, but it hasn't yet announced how much support the defectors will get or when.
The ministry conducted two surveys last year on North Korean defectors living in the South and concluded that there are 553 people that need basic living and medical assistance.
The government conducted those surveys, the first of their kind, after a North Korean mother and son starved to death last year in their apartment in Seoul.
There are still more than 150 defectors whose whereabouts are unknown.
The government plans to conduct the survey twice a year to check up on defectors' living conditions.
