South Korea has decided to independently dispatch troops to the Strait of Hormuz to better protect South Korean nationals and ships passing through the Strait.
That means it will not join the U.S.-led coalition to ensure the freedom of navigation of vessels.
An official from Seoul's defense ministry said Tuesday that the country's Cheonghae Unit, currently operating in the Gulf of Aden on anti-piracy missions in waters off Somalia, is to expand its operating area to the Strait of Hormuz for an unspecified period of time due to rising tensions in the region.
The defense ministry says the foreign ministry has informed its Iranian counterpart of the decision, while Washington is said to have welcomed the move.
