The second episode of "What They've Read" is about the novel, “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982” by author Cho Nam-Joo and it traces the life of a woman born in 1982. Critics have praised the novel for depicting the lives of Korean women with unvarnished realism. It was a sensation among readers and sold 1 million copies after its publication. Its subject matter resonated with many readers, and that led it to be translated into 25 languages. “I felt that the lives of women around the world were connected,” said Arabic translator Manar Ahmad, who translated “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982.” The novel captivates readers with a story that women and people of all ages will be able to relate to. Four show guests who are millennials from different countries discuss the merits of “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982” and what they learned about Korean millennials in particular. The guests are Daniel Hicks (UK), Punita (US), Carlos Gorito (Brazil), and Sarah Mack (US) who all share an interest in Korean culture. Taking turns, they recite passages from “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982“ and air their opinions on the realistic situations depicted in the book. "What They've Read" is not only about millennials born in 1982 and after but also contains a rich story for all generations.
