South Korea-U.S. talks on the cost-sharing of U.S. troops on the Korean Peninsula have hit an impasse over the Trump administration’s demand for a fivefold increase in Seoul’s contribution for next year. U.S. President Donald Trump’s excessive demand has raised concerns at home, with The New York Times calling it a “lose-lose proposition” and The Washington Post an “insult” that the South Korean government “could never politically accept.” The U.S. Congress also weighed in, lauding South Korea’s financial contributions to the alliance.
