Nearly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, and many are still struggling to adapt to the transformation in their lives. But a silver lining is that communities have been truly formed; neighbors, friends and colleagues have been there for one another when it matters most. Providing a touchstone for someone during this time is one of the best ways to be of service, and it helps ease our own anxieties as well, giving us an emotional boost. To delve deeper into the role of the community during the pandemic the Seoul Community Support Center conducted a research project called “A Perspective Into the Role of The Village Community in the COVID-19 Era.” Meet the center’s team leader Son Byung-ho, chief researcher Kim Hyeon-ah, and Kang Bong-sim of the Health Welfare Social Cooperative to learn more about the research.

COVID-19 has increased our time spending at home. The number of people experiencing corona blue, depression, or anger has drastically risen since the outbreak. Despite many signs indicating the pandemic may prolong for over a year, we can’t spend 2021 staying depressed at our homes. Homes must evolve into a lifestyle platform for our relapse, healing, and productivity; we must endeavor to become happier. We invite Doo Ju-yeon, a co-author of the book, “Post Corona Korea” and a CEO of Value Lab Associates, to discuss the core values and potential of our activities at home, and listen to advice from Won Eun-soo, a professor of psychiatry at Cha University School of Medicine about ways to mentally prepare for the post-COVID-19 era.

‘Universal Design’ is made available to be freely used on products or facilities by people regardless of gender, age, physical condition, and other demographics. Hwamok Senior Center, mostly used by elders in their late seventies to early eighties, has adopted the universal design to undergo a complete makeover in-and-out. As opposed to the previous building structure, which was narrow and complex for elders to do anything but eating and resting, it turned into a place that caters to the senior citizens’ needs. We visit the senior center to learn more about the universal design.
