U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin embarked on their Asia trip by visiting Japan on March 15th. They visit S. Korea on May 17th. Some analysts believe the two senior officials chose to visit S. Korea and Japan as their first diplomatic destination to demonstrate the Biden administration’s will to restore its alliance with the two Northeast Asian allies and contain China’s increasing regional presence.
The U.S. State Department stated, “no relationship is important than the one between S. Korea and Japan” to clarify that the inter-relationship between its two allies is as just as important as the U.S. ties with its partners.
