On January 8th, a South Korean court ordered the Japanese government to pay financial reparations to wartime sex slave victims. This is the first legal victory for the South Korean victims against Japan since 12 plaintiffs, including Bae Chun-hee, filed legal action against Tokyo in August 2013. President Moon Jae-in vowed efforts for the futuristic improvement of Seoul-Tokyo ties. Many experts, however, believe the recent court verdict requesting Japan to make compensation is likely to complicate the bilateral relations. Exports regulations and court ruling demanding a Japanese firm pay compensations to wartime forced labor victims have already strained the relationship between South Korea and Japan.
