Amid the heightening tensions, South Korea has decided to withdraw GSOMIA with Japan on August 22nd. The move has terminated the military pact that has been in effect for the last three years since been agreed for the first time in 2016.
Japan could not help but show its bafflement and has strongly expressed regret S. Korea's decision. Seoul, on the other hand, stressed Tokyo has continuously turned down its offers for dialogue to find solutions.
The two states' representatives have chaired meetings on the sidelines of the ASEAN forum and trilateral foreign ministerial meeting between Seoul, Beijing, and Tokyo but could not come up with a breakthrough.
It is to be seen whether South Korea's GSOMIA exit would affect regional stability as it is entangled with North Korea and the U.S.
This week, we talk in-depth about the issue with domestic and foreign experts.
