Japan finally decided to remove South Korea from its trade whitelist on August 2nd amid the heightened trade dispute between the two countries triggered by Tokyo's implementation of export restrictions on Seoul. With more than 1,100 Japanese items expected to be restricted from entering South Korea, experts believe Tokyo’s move would bring damage across Seoul’s economy. The South Korean government said it would actively carry out measures to counter Japan’s move. It also added it would boost dependency on domestic parts and equipment sectors. The situation that’s turning out to be the worst bilateral ties between Seoul and Tokyo in recent years is prompting the international community to express its concerns regarding the issue. Recently, six business associations from the United States have sent both South Korea and Japan official letters, asking them to settle the dispute. High-profile Japanese figures have filed a petition asking their government to draw back the export curbs.
It is to be seen whether the leaders of South Korea and Japan would meet on the sidelines at the upcoming UN General Assembly to resolve the situation. This episode, we talk with experts in and out of Korea about things that could happen due to Seoul’s removal from Tokyo’s whitelist.
