On March 24th, a major upset broke out in Thailand in its first general elections since the 2014 military coup. After being in power for 18 years, the Pheu Thai Party, which is aligned with ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Sinawatra, lost to the pro-military party Palang Pracharat. This raises the possibility that the current junta leader Prayut Chan-o-cha to remain in power. Foreign media analysts say that the voters eventually chose ‘stability’ from the military over ‘change’ that democracy would bring about.
