On March 24th, a major upset broke out in Thailand in its first general elections since the 2014 military coup. After being in power for 18 years, the Pheu Thai Party, which is aligned with ousted former Prime Minister Thaksin Sinawatra, lost to the pro-military party Palang Pracharat. This raises the possibility that the current junta leader Prayut Chan-o-cha to remain in power. Foreign media analysts say that the voters eventually chose ‘stability’ from the military over ‘change’ that democracy would bring about. Meanwhile, an increasing number of people point to alleged voting irregularities saying that the process significantly lacked transparency. On this week’s [The Point: World Affairs], we discuss Thailand’s general election results and connect with a local expert to hear the reason behind the voting results. We also bring you a host of other stories including President Trump’s recognition of the Golan Heights as Israel’s territory, Xi Jinping’s Europe tour and Apple’s video streaming service.
