Episode 32
Deteriorating Korea-Japan relations
Relations between South Korea and Japan continue to get worse. On top of the ruling by Korea's Supreme Court demanding two of Japan's biggest companies to pay compensation to Koreans forced into labor during Japan's colonial rule, the recent radar row has further deteriorated bilateral relations. Japan claims a South Korean naval vessel used a target-lock radar on its patrol aircraft with Prime Minister Abe raising this issue during an interview as well. But video footage released by the Korean government shows that the Japanese patrol plane was flying at threatening low levels. What is the intention behind the Japanese government's allegations that only amplifies the controversy without putting forth clear evidence?
What's more, the head of Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force confirmed long-held suspicions to convert the helicopter destroyer JS Izumo into an aircraft carrier capable of launching the F-35B. On this week's <The Point: World Affairs>, we analyze current Korea-Japan relations in light of Prime Minister Abe's political situation in Japan.
