Korea and Mexico have been expanding cooperation based on their joint membership in MIKTA, a partnership of middle powers. Following Mexico’s leadership last year, Korea has been handed over the chair position to continue joint efforts in combating COVID-19 and tackling other global issues. Korea and Mexico's relationship goes further beyond 1962 when formal diplomatic relations were established. Soldiers of Mexican origin fought in the Korean War in the 1950s as part of US forces. According to estimates over 100,000 Mexican and Mexican-American soldiers fought during the War. Unfortunately, their stories have never been in the spotlight until recently as Ambassador Bruno FIGUEROA made it a mission to research their past and has been working hard since his inauguration as the Mexican Ambassador to Korea in July 2017 to shed light to their stories and sacrifices. This episode of “The Diplomat” will focus on the history and close cooperation between Mexico and Korea’s bilateral relations that began 70 years ago as brothers-in-arms.
