Foreign Correspondents Ep.253
Japan to release Fukushima wastewater into the sea

The Japanese government has decided to release radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the sea through an undersea tunnel just one kilometer off its coast. The Korean government has expressed deep concern over the safety of Japan’s plan and lack of prior consultation. It is also considering filing an complaint with the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Meanwhile, Tokyo Electric Power Company, the operator of the wrecked nuclear plant, claims that the Advanced Liquid Processing System (ALPS) used at the site removes radioactive elements from the water. But there are concerns that some contaminants, such as tritium, could remain after the treatment. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss the regional reaction as well as potential alternatives to Japan’s plan.
