U.S. News and World Report recently ranked Korea’s cultural influence as the seventh highest out of 78 countries surveyed. According to a 2021 survey by the Korea Foundation for International Cultural Exchange, the first things foreigners think of when it comes to Korea included K-pop, Korean food, IT, Hallyu stars and K-drama series. This marks a dramatic shift from the answers from the 2017 survey, which included the Korean War and North Korea’s nuclear program. Meanwhile, earlier this year, Korea topped the European Innovation Scoreboard for non-EU countries for the ninth straight year. A few weeks ago, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development upgraded Korea’s status from a developing economy to a developed economy. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss the country’s growing influence on the international stage.
