Foreign Correspondents Ep.241
Is China seeking a shift in diplomatic approach?

During a recent Politburo meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged senior Communist Party officials to create a “trustworthy, lovable and respectable” image for China, calling for “modest and humble” diplomacy. Xi’s remarks suggest Beijing may be seeking a shift from its aggressive and assertive approach in diplomacy, in an effort to salvage its image which has deteriorated since the pandemic. China has also been focusing on vaccine diplomacy lately, especially since the two Chinese COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by Sinopharm and Sinovac, received emergency approval from the WHO. Meanwhile, there are signs of change in Seoul’s foreign policy toward Beijing, following the summit between President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Joe Biden last month. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss China’s sudden shift of its diplomatic approach and what it could mean for the global geopolitical landscape.
