Foreign Correspondents Ep.226
Japan’s distortion of East Asian history

Harvard Law School professor Mark Ramseyer sparked outrage among the academic community after claiming in an article that victims of Japan’s wartime sexual slavery were voluntarily working as prostitutes. Ramseyer has been funded for years by the Japanese government and businesses. His official title is Mitsubishi Professor of Japanese Legal Studies at Harvard Law School, a professorship created after Mitsubishi Group established a scholarship fund for Japanese students at Harvard. Mitsubishi is one of the Japanese companies engaged in legal disputes with Korean victims of wartime forced labor. In this week’s edition of Foreign Correspondents, we sit down with our panel of journalists to discuss repeated attempts to distort the history of Japan’s colonial rule and how academia and civil society around the world are responding to the Ramseyer controversy.
