"The Diplomats Talk on the Korean War & Peace"- PART 1

The Korean War resulted in 1,220,604 civilian and military deaths, 2,760,408 injured and 1,235,468 missing. Seventy years later, for the first time in Korean broadcast history, Ambassadors from 20 different countries to Korea will give their message of peace and against war for the two Koreas. In the current situation when inter-Korean relations are at a crossroads, the message of peace given by the 20 ambassadors is especially meaningful as they have summoned the history of the Korean War which has been written by the blood and sacrifices of their own youth 70 years ago.

In this three-part series, Part 1 will show the United Kingdom, Australia, the Netherlands, and Canada who were among the first countries to support the UN Security Council’s decision to help S. Korea on June 27, 1950 by sending combat troops; Hungary, which sent medical aid to North Korea; New Zealand, which sent combat troops to assist S. Korea; and Ireland, which took part in the Korean War as a member of the British Commonwealth as it was yet to be a UN member state.

British Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Simon SMITH, who remembers Korean War veterans that he read about during his primary school years said, “I give salute to the generations who experienced the dark years of Korean war.” He added, “Above all, I think of the children whose childhoods, in many cases, whose lives were taken away by the war,” while emphasizing the value of peace by saying, “War is never a good answer to any question.”

James CHOI, the Australian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, introduced Australia’s background to participating in the Korea War saying, “Australia was willing to support the UN security council resolutions which urged all member states to support the Republic of Korea in repelling the invasion, and also to restore the peace and stability on the Korean peninsula.” He also added, “So there’s a sense of confidence that the division of the Korean peninsula will be overcome and that the sacrifice of Australian and other soldiers who fought during the Korean war will not be in vain.”

Ambassador of the Netherlands to the Republic of Korea, Joanne DOORNEWAARD, quoted U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt as saying, “When peace has been broken anywhere, the peace of all countries everywhere is in danger,” adding that “We should never stop fighting for a better world, for peace together.“

Micheal DANAGHER, the Canadian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, who has been posted here for the 3rd time and knows the situation on the Korean Peninsula better than anyone else said, “The Korean peninsula situation is an enormously complicated one and it probably defies an easy solution as the last 65 or 70 years have shown. Clearly we need a lot of patience, we need a lot of commitment, we need a lot of openness to flexibility, openness to innovation and approach.” But, he was optimistic about the future saying, “My hope would be perhaps in my lifetime we can see a normalization of Korean Peninsula.”

Korean scholar and Hungarian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Mózes CSOMA, said, “The Korean War was a war within one nation and that’s why it was particularly a huge tragedy.” He also called on restoring homogeneity between the two Koreas saying,
“In my capacity, as Ambassador and a Korean study scholar, I think one of the most important tasks is to establish a common Korean national identity. And the creation of that common identity will be very important to unify the Korean history.”

Philip TURNER, the New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Korea who is also the New Zealand Ambassador accredited to N. Korea, discussed the Korean War saying, “Seventy years ago this year, thousands of young New Zealanders traveled halfway around the world to a country they knew nothing of, to fight, and in many cases, to die.” He noted, “Today their descendants still serve on the Korean peninsula with the United Nations command,” adding, “They serve today in the hope that the war will never again occur on the Korean peninsula.”

Irish Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Julian CLARE, had a message of encouragement for Korea which has worked tirelessly for peace saying, “I think the response that Korea has shown, which is to keep trying and keep trying and keeping on in spite of the disappointments and setbacks in the times in spite of provocations is a right and only thing to do.”
