[Korea Now Today's Headline] 08/09/MON


1. South Korea reported 1-thousand-492 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, another record high for Sunday, despite fewer tests being done over the weekend. Meanwhile, Non-capital areas accounted for 40 percent of local cases.

2. Vaccine reservations for those aged 18 to 49 will begin from this evening. People can use the online reservation system as it starts with those with number 9 on the last digit of their birth on the resident registration.

3. The Health Authorities said at a briefing on Monday that as Moderna's planned supply of vaccines for August decreases, the vaccine inoculation interval will be temporarily extended to 6-week intervals until September.

4. President 문재인 presided over a meeting of senior officials and aides at the 청와대 on Monday and reiterated that South Korea will make sure to accelerate the achievement of the vaccination by using the secured supplies as much as possible.

5. From September 6th, in levels 1 to 3 'social distancing' measures, all kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high school students across the country will go to school. Also, in-person classes will be expanded, allowing up to two-thirds of each school to have classes even in the fourth level of social distancing.

7. The military authorities of South Korea and the U.S. will begin the preliminary joint military drill starting tomorrow with the crisis management staff training. The drill will be led by South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff.

8. The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, which was held in an unprecedented 'one-year postponement' due to the COVID-19 ended on Sunday after finishing its 17-day schedule. The Korean delegation held a disbanding ceremony before they left Tokyo.

9. Thousands of people have fled their homes on the Greek island of Evia as wildfires burned uncontrollably for the sixth day on Sunday, as ferries were on standby for more evacuations after taking many to safety by sea.
