1. The South Korean government today decided to keep the current COVID-19 restrictions for two more weeks, with the private gathering capped at four people, and restaurants and cafes closing at 9 pm. Over 4-thousand US dollars will be paid to eligible small business owners to compensate for its possible losses.

2. Former President Park Geun-hye was released from prison on Friday after four years and nine months under the presidential special pardon. Park received her pardon certificate at the hospital by herself, but will stay hospitalized until February.

3. U.S. President Joe Biden and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had nearly an hour-long phone call on Thursday to discuss the Ukraine issue. However, the two leaders eventually exchanged warnings over Ukraine, despite Putin’s new year messages to Biden. He also sent his new year wishes to President Moon Jae-in, in a hope for further cooperation.
