Although her name might not bee too familiar, she is a renowned musician in the classical music world. Chin(Unsuk Chin) is based in Berlin, Germany. She received a lot of prizes such as the Grawemeye Award in 2004, the Arnold Schonberg Prize in 2005, the Music Composition Prize of the Prince Pierre Foundation in 2010, the Ho-Am Prize in the Arts in 2012 and the Wihuri Sibelius Prize in 2017.

Her father taught her music theory and piano at an early age. She studied composition at Seoul National University and won several international prizes in her early 20s. She then went to Hoschule fur Musik Und Theater Hamburg to study. Then she moved to Berlin, and there she started working as a freelance composer.

Chin has many compositions under her belt including 5 orchestral works, 6 concertos and an opera. Her opera is titled Alice in Wonderland which is based on Lewis Carroll’s classic novel. It has a lot of playful aspects. I wonder how Alice is portrayed in an opera. Chin says that her music is not specific to any specific culture. But she admits that some musicians like Béla Bartók, Igor Stravinsky, Claude Debussy, Anton Webern, Iannis Xenakis, and György Ligeti, among others have been important influences in her style.
All in all, she is a very versatile composer and I hope I could introduce more of her recordings here on It Classic in the days to come.
