Dong Min Lim has a brother who is also a pianist, Dong Hyek Lim. It’s rare to see siblings play the same instrument. Usually we see trios or musicians playing different instruments. But these two are amazing pianists. Actually, they both won third prize at the 2005 International Frederick Chopin Piano Competiton in Warsaw.

Currently a professor at Keimyung University, Dong Min Lim studied at the Moscow Conservatory, at the Hochschule fur Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover, and at Mannes College. He started playing the pianist when he was nine years old. So that’s older than most pianists who start early as four years old. But his talent showed soon after he started the piano. Within two years, he won various music competitions held in Korea, including the Samick Piano Competition.

In 1996 he won the Chopin Competition for Young Pianists in Moscow and in 2001 he was placed third at the International Piano Competition Ferruccio Busoni. He also won fifth place at the 2002 International Tchaikovsky Competition.

I mentioned he has a brother who is also a renowned pianist. So it’s inevitable that the two are always compared. The two are very different when it comes to styles. Dong Hyek is quite charismatic, where as Dong Min has a more soft and flexible style. So the two have a very different fan base.

Well, there are three albums where you can listen to his performance: Chopin Concours Live 2005, Beethoven’s Sonatas and Chopin’s music.
