Today, we have a soprano that is considered one of the three divas in Korea along with Sumi Jo and Young-ok Shin. Her name is Hei-kyung Hong.
She was born in Seoul in 1959. In 1984 she debuted through the Metropolitan Opera. She played Servilia from Mozart’s opera La Clemenza di Tito. And in 2004 she met her 20th anniversary at the Metropolitan Opera.

She graduated from Julliard School of Music and won the Metropolitan International Music Festival’s Vocal Competition in 1982. In 1983 she was selected as one of the four young vocalists that represent America.
She received the Norman Vincent Peale award in 2007.This award, according to its website, is given to a Member of the Horatio Alger Association “who has made exceptional humanitarian contributions to society; who has been an active participant in the Association; and who continues to exhibit courage, tenacity and integrity in the face of great challenges.”
In 2011 at the 4th Korea Opera awards, she received the Lee In Sung Award which is presented to the representative singer actively performing at the world stage.

Hei-kyung Hong has released 10 albums so far and her album repertoires are very diverse from opera arias and duets to Korean art songs.She is known for her dramatic performances. This year, she performed for a concert supporting the Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics that’s coming up soon. She is also teaching younger opera singers at Yonsei University.
