Born as the firstborn out of three boys to a farmer and his wife, Kwang Chul Youn’s life didn’t seem to be too promising. When he attended school, he wasn’t doing so well, and he even failed the test to become a construction worker. Life was tough for him.
He didn’t have an audio player at home. So it was when he was in third grade when he first encountered music at school. However, he loved singing. He had a passion for it. So he went out on a singing competition held at his school and won first prize. That’s when he found his talent for singing. He decided to become an opera singer. Of course, he couldn't receive any professional singing lessons, but somehow his talents took him to college. He was accepted by Cheongju University’s Depart of Music. Maybe it was luck or just his talent, but he really worked hard upon entering college. This lead to his chance to study in Berlin. He competed in the Placido Domingo International Music Competition in 1993 and he won the grand prize.
About 5 years ago, Youn was asked to join the faculty at Seoul National University. He became a professor there and taught many students. But I guess it didn’t really satisfy him. He quit the job this year and said he wanted to focus on performing.
Bass Kwang Chul Youn has performed in various performance venues worldwide including the Bayreuther Festspiele, a famous music festival held in Germany, and the Metropolitan Opera. He wants to be on stage as long as the venues seek out for him.
