The proportion of those employed by small and medium-sized companies fell below 90-percent in 2021, for the first time since 2004.
According to Statistics Korea, of more than a total of 27 million people employed in South Korea last year, around 24 million people worked for SMEs with fewer than 3-hundred employees.
This is equal to 89.7 percent of the workforce.
The source says the decline is mainly due to sluggish employment opportunities at SMEs in the hospitality industry due to COVID-19.
On the other hand, the proportion of people employed in large corporations exceeded the 10-percent mark for the first time in 2021.
