An event to highlight and strengthen relations between South Korea and ASEAN countries kicked off on Tuesday.
ASEAN Week 2021 organized by intergovernmental organization ASEAN-Korea Centre, held an exhibition under the theme of "rice," a staple food in Southeast Asia.
It displayed traditional items used for cooking and harvesting rice, to give viewers a glimpse of the lifestyle in Southeast Asia.

"It will be an eye-opener also for all the nationals or the general public, the importance of rice, and how rice is cultivated from farming, cultivating soil… up to producing the rice."

The event also held an exhibition on products that ASEAN countries hope to export to South Korea.
Countries including the Philippines, Myanmar and Cambodia showcased a wide range of products from beverages like coffee and tea to dried fruits and handmade items.
An official from the ASEAN-Korea Centre said they are currently working to ensure that these products made by small businesses in Southeast Asia meet Korea's import requirements.

"For products to be imported to Korea, there are some safety requirements, quarantine requirements as well. it needs to meet certain safety requirements so that ASEAN products can be imported to Korea."

Programs on trade and investment will also be held throughout the event.

"Until last year, ASEAN week mainly focused on cultural activities, but this year… we tried to explore business opportunities for Korean entrepreneurs in ASEAN, and career opportunities for ASEAN students studying in Korea."

The online and offline two-day event will last until Wednesday at the convention hall at COEX in Gangnam.
