U.S. says Iranian voters denied 'free and fair' presidential election Updated: 2021-06-20 12:21:22 KST

The U.S. State Department says voters in Iran were denied the chance to participate in a "free and fair election" on Saturday when the country elected hardline judge Ebrahim Raisi as its new president.
Raisi is under U.S. sanctions for alleged human rights abuses, but the State Department also said it would continue indirect talks with Iran on rejoining the 2015 nuclear deal.
In Iran's election Saturday, many political heavyweights were barred from running, and turnout was at a record low of less than 49 percent.
Israel's foreign ministry has also expressed dismay over the election, saying the world should have grave concerns about Ebrahim Raisi as president, calling him an "extremist" committed to rapidly advancing Iran's nuclear program.
