Nearly one in five schoolchildren in South Korea are extremely addicted to either smartphones or the Internet.
A government survey of some 1.three million students, from the fourth grade of elementary school, and first grades of middle and high school, found 220-thousand were at "high risk" of addiction.
This means they could require medical treatment or close monitoring due to a lack of self-control.
Their dependency declined slightly on-year, but Internet addiction jumped 13 percent.
Researchers attribute it to easier access to electronic devices and online classes due to COVID-19.
