Bill, Melinda Gates end their marriage after 27 years Updated: 2021-05-04 15:16:27 KST

One of the richest men in the world, Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft with Paul Allen in 1975. He started dating Melinda the same year she joined Microsoft as a product manager in 1987, and the two married in 1994 on a Hawaiian island.
Since then, the couple have raised three children aged 25, 21 and 18, and founded the Gates Foundation - which works all over the world to help people lead healthy, productive lives.
In her 2019 memoir, Melinda had said that with Bill, they've navigated imbalances in their marriage and parenting journey and noted how working together at the foundation made their relationship better.
But as noted in their identical statements on their social media accounts announcing their divorce, the Gates have made the decision to end the marriage after a great deal of thought and a lot of work on their relationship.
While both will remain co-chairs and trustees of the foundation and continue their work together, they no longer believed that they could grow together as a couple in the next phase of their lives.
Once the richest person in the world, and currently worth an estimated $124 billion according to Forbes, Bill Gates has been gradually scaling back his involvement in Microsoft since 2000, from transitioning out of day-to-day roles to stepping down from the board.
Nobody knows the terms of their divorce agreement yet. How the couple end up settling their estate and any impact on the foundation will be closely watched, though the three Gates children aren't expected to inherit any more than a tiny portion of the family fortune.
