Leaders Summit On Climate Change
"In coming May, the second P4G Summit will be held in Seoul.
Member countries, civil socities, industries as well as other diverse partners will come together to accelerate the vision of carbon neutrality for humanity.
As a host, Korea will exert every effort to prepare for the summit that inspires actionable vision and stronger cooperation.
I ask for your keen interest and participation so that the second P4G summit could serve as a stepping stone for a successful COP26 summit in November."
After rising for decades, Covid-19 driven lockdowns led global carbon dioxide emissions to fall by a significant 6.4 percent in 2020.
But the pandemic offers only a short term reduction in global emissions.
Despite the latest dip, the world is still heading for a catastrophic temperature rise of above 3 degrees Celsius this century - far beyond the goals of the Paris Agreement.
And, emissions are beginning to rise again in some places, surpassing pre-Covid levels.
How can we bet on a green pandemic recovery AND meet the Net-Zero 2050 goal?
It's against this backdrop that South Korea is hosting the second summit on 'Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030.'
After a yearlong delay due to the pandemic, we finally begin our one month countdown to the P4G Seoul set to kick off on May 30th.
On our News In-depth tonight, we have joining us Yoo Yeon-chul, Executive Director of the summit preparatory office and South Korea's Ambassador for Climate Change.
Ambassador Yoo, great to have you on the show.
After its inaugural summit in Copenhagen in 2018, Seoul has received the baton to host the second. The P4G Seoul will mark the first multilateral summit on climate change for South Korea to host.
First, tell us. What is the significance both for South Korea as well as for the P4G Summit?
The theme of P4G Seoul summit is "Green Recovery and 2050 Carbon Neutrality." What are the main agendas?
Now, during the Leaders Summit on Cimate Change hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden last week, President Moon vowed to level up South Korea's NDC and end public financing of overseas coal-fired power plants.
What near- AND long-term goals are being discussed to inch closer to achieve carbon neutrality? By near, I mean 2030, by long, I mean 2050.
The summit also aims to share green growth technologies with developing countries which take up the majority of participating nations. Tell us about Korea's role in helping developing countries with their green transformation.
What's special about the P4G Summit is that it promotes engagement of the private sector. Could you elaborate on the participation of the private sector and why it's important?
A joint communique will be adopted after the summit. Do you expect it to help expedite the global pledges made under the Paris Agreement and serve as a stepping stone towards the COP26 set for November?
Korea's climate ambassador, Yeon-chul joining us for our new in-depth today. Many thanks.
