Spending on lottery up 7.2%, household spending down 2.3% in S. Korea last year Updated: 2021-04-13 13:48:27 KST

South Korean households last year spent less money overall, but data show they spent more on lottery tickets, apparently hoping for a windfall in difficult times.
The Korean Statistical Information Service says average monthly spending on lottery tickets was up more than seven percent on year.
And in the top and bottom 20 percent income brackets it was up almost 45 percent.
During the same period, total household expenditures were down more than two percent the biggest decline since data were first collected in 2006.
