Ki Sung-yueng files damages claim, Son Heung-min ruled out of Japan friendly Updated: 2021-03-22 15:48:12 KST

Time now for 'This Week in Sports' which means we have our sports editor Paul Neat joining us in the studio.
Paul, let's begin with the Olympics. No fans from overseas will be allowed at this summer's Games - this is going to have a huge economic impact on Japan.

Yes, the organizers of the Tokyo Olympics on Saturday made the announcement that no fans from overseas will be allowed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a result… according to economists at the Dai-ichi Life Research Institute the economic impact is estimated at 1.4 billion U.S. Dollars with around 6-hundred-30-thousand tickets due to be returned.
Officials say they will meet in April to discuss how many spectators already in Japan are allowed.

Speaking of heading to Japan, the Korean National Football Team arrived there today ahead of Thursday's friendly match.
But, the team will be without its captain Son Heung-min.

Yes, it was announced late on Sunday night Korea time that Son Heung-min has withdrawn from the squad due to injury.
Son has missed Tottenham's last two matches after picked up a hamstring injury in the North London Derby defeat on March 15th and has been replaced by Ulsan Hyundai winger Kim In-sung.
Hwang Hee-chan has also withdrawn… as his club RB Leipzig failed to reach an agreement with the German health authorities for a quarantine exemption.

Former national team captain Ki Sung-yueng has been in the headlines both on and off the field of late. I understand there has been an update regarding the allegations of sexual misconduct?

Yes, Ki's lawyer released a statement on Monday to say that he is seeking compensation for what he says are "false accusations."
Ki is seeking 5-hundred million Korean won, or around 4-hundred-22 thousand U.S. dollars in damages.
The claim was filed at Seoul Central District Court.
Two former elementary school teammates on February 24th accused Ki of physical and sexual abuse between January and June 2000.
Ki hit back immediately and denied the accusations.
On the field, meanwhile, Ki has scored in each of his last three games helping FC Seoul move up to second in the K League 1 table.

And finally, to domestic baseball, the new KBO season begins in less than two weeks and I understand that there will be some new rules?

Yes, there are some new rules this year… aimed at speeding the game up.
KBO said a batter leading off an inning must enter the box within one minute and 55 seconds, compared to two minutes and five seconds previously.
Any hitter who takes more than two minutes will be fined around 1-hundred-77 U.S. Dollars
KBO said this change is to help enforce the current rule requiring the first pitch of a new inning to be thrown no more than two minutes after the final out of the previous inning.

Thank-you for that, Paul. We shall see you next week.

Thank-you.
