President Moon Jae-in today thanked the military's nursing officers for their contributions to the fight against COVID-19, saying that the South Korean people will not forget their efforts.
He was speaking at the graduation ceremony of the Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy a first for a sitting president.
The Blue House said he went to encourage military medical personnel on the front lines.
Through the pride and commitment of our young nursing officers, the people have been given hope that we will beat COVID-19. And I was also able to come and give some encouragement to the cadets, and reinforce our determination to overcome the coronavirus.
Moon handed out insignias to 80 newly commissioned nursing officers.
He also promised that the state will take more responsibility for their health and safety and boost support for them,.. including through an expansion of housing facilities and childcare centers.
After the ceremony, he inspected the state-of-the-art medical equipment there, including emergency helicopters.
Moon also visited the academy in March last year when 75 new nursing officers were dispatched to the southeastern city of Daegu to support medical efforts amid a spike in COVID-19 cases there.
