N. Korea's replacement of FM may signal positive change: U.S. official Updated: 2020-01-26 09:04:43 KST

There have been concerns that North Korea's recent replacement of its foreign minister with a more hardline official could hinder progress in the nuclear talks, but a senior U.S. official thinks it might be positive.
The U.S. assistant secretary of state of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, David Stilwell, said Friday that the change itself could be meaningful, and he said he hopes it'll bring the two sides back to the table.
The North's new foreign minister is Ri Son-kwon, a former military official with no known experience as a diplomat.
Stilwell was asked whether there'll be a meeting with North Korea on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany next month, but he said he was not aware of any such plans.
